Even in Roman times and in the Middle Ages, there was a harbour on the Danube on the site of this house and below the neighbouring Maria am Gestade church, where, among other things, the salt transported by ship from what is now Upper Austria (Salzkammergut) to Vienna was unloaded and weighed by the "salt office". The "Zeche der Salzer" was obliged to take care of the maintenance of the church - "Salzer" was the name given to those "well-to-do citizens" who were granted the right by an imperial patent to sell the salt that arrived there by ship on the Gries (Salzgries). They were also known as "Griesler", from which the Viennese term "Greißler" later emerged. Even today, a bronze sculpture (the salt boatman in the boat) by Franz Barwig the Younger at the entrance to the building in which this fine flat is located is a reminder of those times.


Public transport connections are excellent at this location. Both the "Herrengasse" underground station and the "Schottenring" station are just a 5-minute walk away.
